First published in 1911, this novel is presented through an English language teacher's narrative of events in tsarist Russia and Geneva. Kyrilo Razumov, a student in St Petersburg who wants only a career, is drawn in when the assassin Haldin, who has killed a minister, asks him for help. Razumov's choice sends him westward among exiles, where he meets Haldin's sister Natalia and the circle of revolutionists around Peter Ivanovitch. The book watches a man living under surveillance and under his own lie. It is a political novel of betrayal and confession, not a thriller of the Okhrana as an institution.
