This play for voices, first heard in 1954, presents one spring day in the small Welsh seaside town of Llareggub. Two narrators move from night dreams through morning, noon, and night again, calling up Captain Cat, the blind retired skipper; Polly Garter; Mr and Mrs Pugh; Organ Morgan; and many others. The dead speak from the graves; the living gossip, court, sell sweets, and nurse grudges. There is little plot beyond the passage of the day. The work is a lyric radio play of a community, not a realistic social drama and not a history of any named Welsh port.
