First published in 1916, this novel is told by a French infantryman among the squad of Le Feu in the trenches of the Western Front. The men wait in mud, march to rest billets, forage, talk about home and food, and go forward into bombardment and assault. Named comrades such as Volpatte, Poterloo, and Barque appear, disappear, and are discussed when they are gone. There is no single hero and little plot beyond the rotation of the line. The book is a collective war narrative from the ranks, not a staff history and not a memoir of one famous battle.
