Set in Dublin on 16 June 1904, this novel follows the advertising canvasser Leopold Bloom, the young teacher and would-be writer Stephen Dedalus, and Bloom's wife Molly through a single day. Chapters track a funeral, a newspaper office, a lunch, a brothel district, and a late return to Eccles Street, while the prose shifts through parody, catechism, and interior monologue. Bloom's Jewishness and cuckoldry, Stephen's quarrel with Ireland and with his dead mother, and the city's talk form the action. Homeric episode titles shadow the wanderings. First published in 1922, the book is a day-long city novel, not a guidebook and not a retelling of the Odyssey in costume.
