Typhoon and Other Tales

This collection gathers several of Conrad's shorter fictions of ships, exile, and moral test. The title novella puts Captain MacWhirr, a literal-minded master, and his first mate Jukes through a China Sea hurricane while coolie passengers fight in the hold over money-chests. Companion pieces typically include Falk, about a tug master and a terrible hunger in the Southern Ocean; Amy Foster, about a Central European castaway stranded in an English village; and The Secret Sharer, in which a young captain hides a fugitive officer in his cabin. The volume is a set of independent sea tales, not a novel and not a manual of storm seamanship.
