This volume pairs two Conrad stories set on the Congo river system of the late nineteenth century. Heart of Darkness is framed as Marlow's account, on a Thames yacht, of his steamboat command up an African river for a continental trading company and of his meeting with the ivory agent Kurtz. An Outpost of Progress follows Kayerts and Carlier, two mediocre Company men left at a remote station with a store of ivory and a staff they barely understand; isolation, trade, and their own talk of civilization undo them. Both pieces treat European agents in the Free State trade. They are independent stories, not a continuous novel.
