Two Tales: The Royal Slave & the Fair Jilt
The Royal Slave and the Fair Jilt
By Mrs. Aphra Behn · 1953
Back to CatalogueThis volume pairs two late-seventeenth-century prose narratives. Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave, follows an African prince who is tricked aboard a slaver, sold in Surinam, reunited with Imoinda, and leads a revolt against the planters. The Fair Jilt follows Miranda, a beautiful Antwerp woman whose desire and ambition drive her through convent intrigue, the ruin of a prince, and marriage to the soldier Prince Tarquin, whom she later urges toward crime. Both pieces mix romance, travel report, and scandal chronicle. The book is two independent tales, not a novel cycle and not a history of Surinam or the Low Countries.
