Synopsis
This collection gathers twenty-one of Kipling's short stories from his Indian, English, and later periods. Typical pieces include imperial hill stations and bazaars, soldiers' talk, animal fables, ghostly rickshaws, and the tale of two adventurers who take a crown beyond the Khyber. Voices range from vernacular comedy to cruel fable. Each story is complete in itself; there is no continuous novel. The book is a sampler of his short fiction, not the Jungle Book cycle alone and not a verse collection.
