First published in 1845, this historical novel returns to the four companions of The Three Musketeers two decades later, in the France of the Fronde and the England of the civil wars. D'Artagnan, still a lieutenant, is sent on missions that pull Athos, Porthos, and Aramis out of private life; they face Mazarin, a grown Vicomte de Bragelonne, and the unfinished business of Milady's son. The action moves between Paris, a provincial siege, and the scaffold of Charles I. The book is a sequel of loyalty and politics, not a standalone origin story of the four.
