This selection gathers twelve of Mansfield's short stories from the 1910s and early 1920s. Typical pieces stay with a few hours in a household or a public room: a colonial childhood in New Zealand, a garden party continued after a death down the lane, sisters after a father's funeral, a woman alone at a bandstand, a voyage home, an office blotter and a fly. Plots are slight; the turn is a change of feeling. Recurring subjects are class, illness, and the inner lives of girls and women. The book is a set of independent impressionist stories, not a novel.
