Written about 1601, this comedy is set in Illyria, where Viola is shipwrecked, disguises herself as the page Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, whom she loves while he sends her to court the mourning Olivia. Olivia falls for the messenger instead. Viola's twin Sebastian, thought drowned, arrives and is mistaken for her. The subplot follows Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, Maria, and the steward Malvolio, who is gulled with a forged letter into a yellow-stockinged display. The play is a festive comedy of twins, music, and misplaced desire, not a tragedy of the shipwreck.
