First published in 1963, this archaeological synthesis presents the mound of Troy as a sequence of settlements from the Early Bronze Age through the Roman town, based on Blegen's Cincinnati excavations of the 1930s. He describes the successive citadels, walls, houses, and cemeteries, and he sets the destruction levels against the Homeric story without treating the epic as a site plan. Pottery, trade, and the city's place on the Dardanelles are the evidence. The book is a stratified history of a real place, not a retelling of the Iliad and not a memoir of the dig.
