Troy and Its Remains
A Narrative of Researches and Discoveries Made on the Site of Ilium and in the Trojan Plain
By Heinrich Schliemann · 2015
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1875, this is Schliemann's account of his excavations at Hisarlik in northwestern Anatolia, the mound he identified with Homer's Troy. He describes trenches, layers of burned debris, pottery, and the cache of gold and ornaments he called Priam's Treasure, arguing from the Iliad as well as from the ground. Plans and catalogues of finds sit beside a first-person narrative of digging and dispute. The book is a pioneer excavation report mixed with Homeric advocacy, not a literary retelling of the Trojan War and not a modern stratigraphic survey.
