Synopsis
This collection gathers pulpy detective stories Chandler wrote in the 1930s and later reshaped, including the long title piece in which a private investigator is hired to break up a rich man's dangerous attachment and finds gambling, a blonde, and hired muscle instead. Companion stories send the same hard-boiled voice through Los Angeles offices, hotels, and canyon houses: missing pearls, a waiting woman, a fish pond that hides a crime. Clients lie; the job is to stay upright in a corrupt market. The book is a set of crime tales, not a single Marlowe novel.
