Written about 1602, this play is set in the seventh year of the Trojan War, with the Greek camp stalled over Achilles' withdrawal and Troy arguing whether to keep Helen. Troilus, a Trojan prince, loves Cressida; her uncle Pandarus brokers their meeting, then she is sent to the Greeks in an exchange of prisoners and is courted by Diomedes. Thersites jeers at both sides; Ulysses and Nestor manage reputation as a weapon. The action is councils, a truce, and disillusion rather than heroic combat. The play is a bitter comedy of war and bargaining, not a simple love tragedy.
