First published in 1894, this novel is set among English art students in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Trilby O'Ferrall, a tone-deaf model and laundress, is loved by the painter Little Billee and befriended by his companions Taffy and the Laird. The musician Svengali, a manipulative hypnotist, later takes control of her voice and tours her as a concert singer she cannot be in her own person. Studios, holidays on the Continent, and London society form the later scenes. The book is a Bohemian romance about influence and performance, not a manual of mesmerism.
