Synopsis
First published in 1883, this adventure novel is narrated mainly by Jim Hawkins, who finds a pirate map at his family's coastal inn after the death of the lodger Billy Bones. Squire Trelawney and Dr Livesey fit out a schooner for the marked island; the hired crew includes the one-legged cook Long John Silver, whose smile covers a planned seizure of the ship. On the island Jim moves between the stockade and the pirates, while mutiny, a marooned man, and the hunt for the cache drive the action. The book is a boys' tale of treasure and betrayal, not a history of real buccaneers.
