Synopsis
This novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series is set mainly at Malta during the Napoleonic Wars, where Captain Jack Aubrey's ship is under repair and the harbour is thick with spies. Stephen Maturin, surgeon and intelligence agent, works against a French network that uses the island's docks, convents, and drawing rooms, while a woman named Laura Fielding becomes a point of danger and attachment. A later cruise into the Red Sea and desert operations extend the intrigue beyond the harbour. The book is a naval and espionage novel of a wartime base, not a general history of Malta.
