This volume collects Stevenson's first-person travel writings rather than his novels. Typical pieces follow a canoe trip through Belgium and France, the Cevennes walk with the donkey Modestine, an emigrant passage and overland journey toward California, life in a mining camp, and later notes from the Pacific islands. Companions, weather, cheap inns, and his own illness recur; the voice is essayistic and comic. There is no single itinerary joining every chapter. The book is a set of travel narratives, not Treasure Island and not a biography compiled by others.
