First published in 1879, this short travel narrative follows Stevenson on a twelve-day walk through the Cevennes in southern France, accompanied by a stubborn donkey he names Modestine. He camps in a sleeping-sack, bargains for lodging, and crosses Protestant villages still marked by the Camisard wars of the previous century. The days are weather, hills, and talk with priests, peasants, and innkeepers. Modestine's pace and his own solitude are the running joke and the subject. The book is a walking journal, not a history of the Huguenot rising and not a novel.
