Synopsis
First published in 1897, this travel narrative follows Mary Kingsley through the coastal and river regions of West Africa, among trading posts, Fang country, and the swamps of the Ogowe. She collects fish and fetishes for museums, records trade in oil and ivory, and describes canoe travel, missionary stations, and local law as she understood it. A later section treats death customs and the practicalities of a woman travelling with carriers. The book is a first-person account of trade rivers and forest, not a novel and not an official government report.
