First published in 1799, this narrative recounts Mungo Park's journey from the Gambia into the West African interior in search of the Niger's course and direction. Park travels with a servant and later alone, falling into the hands of a Moorish camp, escaping, and reaching the river at Sego before turning back through illness and want. He notes trade, slavery, river craft, and the villages that fed or robbed him. The book is an exploration journal of one route, not a full geography of Africa and not a later colonial survey.
