This novel is set among a circle of young people in and around Leith and Edinburgh in the 1980s, told in Scots-inflected voices that shift from narrator to narrator. Mark Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, Begbie, and others move through heroin, theft, clubs, and sudden violence, with episodes of withdrawal, friendship, and betrayal. There is no single detective plot; the book is a sequence of linked stories about habit, boredom, and the wish to get out. Family flats, pubs, and London interludes form the map. It is a vernacular novel of addiction and a local scene, not a medical study and not a travel book about Scotland.
