First published in 1958, this children's novel follows Tom Long, sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in a flat converted from an old house, where he is forbidden to disturb a landlady. When the grandfather clock strikes thirteen, the paved yard becomes a large garden of an earlier generation, and Tom meets Hatty, a girl who seems to live there in changing seasons and ages. Their meetings are limited by his return home and by what time does to her. The book is a time-slip story of friendship and growing up, not a ghost tale of horror.
