First published in 1927, this novel is set mainly in a summer house on the Isle of Skye, where the Ramsays host family and guests. The first part follows a delayed plan to take the children to the lighthouse, and the currents of feeling among Mrs Ramsay, her philosopher husband, and the painter Lily Briscoe. A short middle section leaps across years of war and death by noting what happens to the house. The last part returns to the survivors as a boat finally goes out and Lily finishes a picture. The book is a modernist novel of perception and time, not a plot of incident.
