Synopsis
First published in 1950, this Inspector Grant mystery opens at a writers' colony in the English countryside, where the striking photographer Leslie Searle arrives among novelists and their keepers and then vanishes after a riverside walk. Grant, of Scotland Yard, has to decide whether the missing guest is victim, runaway, or someone who was never quite the person the household thought. Local jealousies, a river, and the manners of a closed artistic set supply the field. The book is a detective novel of disappearance and identity, not a portrait of identifiable living writers.
