First published in 1960, this novel is narrated by Scout Finch, a child in the small Alabama town of Maycomb during the Depression. She and her brother Jem live with their widowed father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, and their cook Calpurnia. The children's curiosity about the reclusive neighbour Boo Radley runs beside a criminal case: Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of raping a white woman. The book follows how the trial and the town's racial codes press on the children, and how courage and courtesy look from a child's height. It is a courtroom novel and a study of a Southern town.
