This volume collects three verse plays Lorca wrote in the 1930s about households in rural Spain. Blood Wedding follows a bride who flees her wedding with a former lover, and the feud that the families take into the woods. Yerma is the study of a childless wife whose longing turns against honour and a barren marriage. The House of Bernarda Alba confines a widow's daughters behind mourning walls as the mother's rule and a hidden courtship destroy the house. Recurring subjects are desire, reputation, and the force of custom on women. The book is a set of independent tragedies, not a single continuous drama.
