This fourteenth-century historical novel, attributed to Luo Guanzhong, retells the fall of the Han and the wars of Wei, Shu, and Wu. It opens with the Yellow Turban revolt and the sworn brotherhood of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, then follows Cao Cao's rise in the north, Sun Quan in the south, and the long struggle that includes the battle of Red Cliffs. Advisers such as Zhuge Liang, betrayals, successive rulers, and the eventual reunification under Jin fill a vast cast. The book is a prose epic of statecraft and loyalty, not a modern archive history.
