Synopsis

First published in 1958, this novel is set in the Igbo village of Umuofia in the late nineteenth century. Okonkwo, a wrestler and yam farmer, has built wealth and rank to escape the shame of his father Unoka, and he rules his household by severity. The first part shows clan ritual, oracle, war, and the accidental killing that sends him into exile. In the later parts he returns to find Christian missionaries and colonial administration dividing the village, and he must face a power that does not recognise his titles. The book is a tragedy of one man and a community under conquest.
