This selection gathers lyric poems by Edward Thomas, written mainly in the last years of his life and titled from his 1915 piece on the leftovers of winter that still belong to spring. The poems attend to English lanes, woods, weather, birds, inns, and the names of places and plants, often in a speaking voice that hesitates between going and staying. War appears at the edge: enlistment, barracks, and the sense of a country about to be left. The volume is an anthology of short rural and meditative poems, not a narrative of the Western Front and not a collected prose.
