First published in 1867, this novel follows Therese, a young woman raised by her aunt and married to the sickly Camille Raquin. They live above a haberdashery in a dingy Paris arcade. Laurent, Camille's friend and a painter, becomes Therese's lover; the pair drown Camille on a river outing and then marry, only to find the corpse and their own nerves occupying the room. Madame Raquin's paralysis and the Thursday domino circle tighten the aftermath. The book is a study of crime and physiological remorse, not a courtroom drama.
