Synopsis

First published in 1937, this novel is told largely through the voice of Janie Crawford, who recounts her life to her friend Pheoby after returning to Eatonville, Florida. As a girl she is married off to the farmer Logan Killicks, then leaves him for Joe Starks, who builds a store and becomes mayor, shutting her into the role of his wife. After Joe's death she meets Tea Cake Woods and goes with him to work on the muck of the Everglades, among bean-pickers and a coming hurricane. The book follows her search for a speaking self inside marriage, race, and weather.
