Synopsis
First published in 1919 from a manuscript written when the author was nine, this short novel follows Mr. Salteena, a would-be gentleman of doubtful birth, and Ethel Monticue as they leave a modest house for a world of earls, levees, and London rooms. Salteena seeks polish from the Earl of Clincham so he may rise; Ethel prefers the wealthy Bernard Clark. The prose keeps a child's spelling of social grandeur, food, and romance. The book is a comic social story, not a guidebook to Edwardian court life.
