First published in 1922, this memoir follows the Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica under Robert Falcon Scott. Cherry-Garrard, a young assistant zoologist, describes the voyage south, hut life on Ross Island, sledging, and the winter journey he made with Wilson and Bowers through darkness to the emperor penguin rookery at Cape Crozier. He then recounts the polar party's march, the search for the dead, and the scientific work that continued. The book is a participant's narrative of logistics, cold, and companionship, not a later historian's verdict on Scott versus Amundsen.
