The Worlds of John Aubrey

Being a Further Selection of Brief Lives, Together with Excerpts from His Writings on Antiquities, Science and Folklore

By John Aubrey · 1988

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This selection from the seventeenth-century antiquary John Aubrey gathers further short lives of his contemporaries together with extracts from his notes on monuments, natural philosophy, and folklore. The biographical pieces sketch writers, scientists, courtiers, and odd characters in discontinuous anecdotes rather than formal eulogy. The other excerpts record standing stones, recipes, superstitions, and scraps of experiment, the materials of his unfinished county and scientific collections. The volume presents Aubrey as a gatherer of talk and remnant, not as the author of a single treatise. It is an anthology of his manuscripts, not a modern biography of him.
