The World Turned Upside Down: Radical Ideas During the English Revolution
By Christopher Hill · 2015
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1972, this history examines radical religious and political ideas in England during the 1640s and 1650s. Hill follows groups and writers who rejected the established church and, in some cases, private property or conventional morality: Levellers, Diggers, Ranters, Seekers, early Quakers, Muggletonians, and assorted millenarians and mechanick preachers. He reads pamphlets, court records, and sermons for claims about the Spirit, the Norman Yoke, communal land, and the end of tithes. The book is an intellectual and social history of the English Revolution from below, not a campaign narrative of the Civil Wars.
