First published in 1962, this study uses Herodotus's Histories as a guide to the Greek and Near Eastern world of the sixth and fifth centuries BC. The author discusses the historian's life, travels, and method of inquiry, then surveys Ionia, Egypt, Persia, and the Greek city-states before retelling the Ionian Revolt and the Persian invasions that climax at Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. Later sections treat Greek literature and the habits of the polis. The book is a companion to Herodotus rather than a translation of the Histories or a specialist monograph on one campaign.
