First issued in volumes from 1923 to 1931, this is Winston Churchill's narrative history of the First World War as seen from the British government and the Admiralty. He covers the naval race, the opening campaigns, his years as First Lord, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli, the Somme and later Western Front fighting, the war at sea, and the peace settlement, with chapters of personal recollection mixed with staff papers and argument. He defends contested decisions and assigns blame to colleagues and allies. The work is a participant's multi-volume war history, not a biography of his whole career.
