This collected edition brings together Jane Austen's six completed novels of English gentry life, first published between 1811 and 1818: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Across the set, young women of limited fortune negotiate courtship, property, and family pressure in country houses, Bath, and London, among clergymen, naval officers, squires, and fashionable snobs. Some editions add the unfinished Sanditon or The Watsons, the early Lady Susan, or a handful of letters and juvenilia. The volume is an omnibus of her fiction, not a biography and not a single continuous story.
