First published in 1887, this novel is set in the woodland parish of Little Hintock, where timber, cider, and class shape marriage. Giles Winterborne, a traveling apple man, expects to marry Grace Melbury, the timber-dealer's educated daughter, but her father prefers the young doctor Edred Fitzpiers. Fitzpiers's restlessness and an affair with Felice Charmond, the local lady, break the household; Giles loses house and standing; Marty South, who loves Giles, works on in the woods. The plot turns on a marriage law, a hut in the trees, and who belongs to the place. It is a rural tragedy of mismatch, not a forestry manual.
