Big Chief Elizabeth

By Giles Milton · 2011

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This narrative history recounts England's first attempts to plant a colony in North America in the reign of Elizabeth I. Milton follows the reconnaissance and settlements associated with Humphrey Gilbert, Walter Raleigh, and John White: the Roanoke voyages, the birth of Virginia Dare, and the disappearance of the Lost Colony that White found vanished on his return. Native diplomacy, shipboard disaster, and court patronage in London share the narrative with the colonists' years on the Carolina coast. The book is a story of a failed foothold, not a general history of later Virginia.
