The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

By L. Frank Baum · 2010

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1900, this children's novel follows Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl carried by a cyclone into the land of Oz with her dog Toto. A good witch sends her along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard for a way home. She is joined by a Scarecrow who wants brains, a Tin Woodman who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. The Wizard sets them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West; after that task the group learns what each companion already had and how Dorothy may return. The book is a quest across coloured countries, not a political allegory spelled out in the text.
