First published in 1859-60, this sensation novel is told through dated narratives by a drawing-master, a housekeeper, and others. Walter Hartright meets a lost woman in white on a London road, then goes to Limmeridge to teach Laura Fairlie and her half-sister Marian Halcombe. Laura, who resembles the woman in white, is pushed into marriage with Sir Percival Glyde; the Italian Count Fosco watches the household. Walter and Marian uncover a plot that uses asylums, a forged identity, and an old Hampshire secret to seize an inheritance. The book is a mystery of substitution and evidence, not a ghost story.
