First published in 1962, this children's novel is set in an alternate nineteenth-century England where wolves cross a Channel tunnel and winter is hard. Bonnie Green of Willoughby Chase is left with her poor cousin Sylvia when her parents sail, and the new governess Miss Slighcarp seizes the house, dismisses the servants, and ships the girls to Mrs Brisket's brutal orphan school. They escape with the help of Simon, a boy who keeps geese on the wolds, and try to reach London and a lawyer who can prove the fraud. The book is an adventure of false guardians, snow, and reclaiming a stolen estate.
