This late Shakespeare play opens at the Sicilian court, where King Leontes suddenly accuses his pregnant wife Hermione of adultery with his childhood friend Polixenes, King of Bohemia. A trial, an oracle, and the death of a young prince follow; the newborn Perdita is sent to be abandoned on the Bohemian coast. After a sixteen-year gap marked by Time, the action shifts to a sheep-shearing festival where Perdita, raised by a shepherd, loves Prince Florizel. The last acts return the lost daughter to Sicilia and stage a reunion with the living and the supposedly dead. First performed about 1611.
