This collection of short stories is set mainly in Ireland and among the English who visit or remember it. The title story follows English holidaymakers at an Irish hotel whose settled comfort is broken when one of them is forced to hear what the surrounding political violence means. Companion pieces treat marriages, boarding-houses, parish rooms, and middle-class households in which courtesy and habit keep a darker knowledge at bay. Trevor's people are often respectable, lonely, and late to understand the harm they live beside. The book is a set of separate encounters, not a continuous novel.
