First published in 1902, this novel opens in London with Kate Croy, whose family is poor and compromised, and Merton Densher, a journalist she loves but cannot marry without money. Aunt Maud will support Kate only on her own terms. Into their circle comes Milly Theale, a young American heiress who is mortally ill and who wants to live. In London and then in Venice, Kate shapes a plan: Densher will give Milly the appearance of love so that her fortune may later free the English pair. The book follows the moral cost of that design as Milly's generosity and knowledge press on both lovers.
