In a quiet Tokyo suburb, Toru Okada quits his job, searches for a missing cat, and then for his wife Kumiko after she disappears. He sits at the bottom of a dry well, takes odd commissions, and meets the sisters Malta and Creta Kano, a veteran who recounts a wartime atrocity in Mongolia, and the rising politician Noboru Wataya, Kumiko's brother. Letters, dreams, and a strange hotel room fold private marriage trouble into state violence and family control. The novel moves between domestic waiting and historical testimony without settling into a single detective solution. It is a long contemporary novel of disappearance, memory, and power in Japan.
