Synopsis
This second volume of a walking memoir takes up the journey of 1933-1934 as the young Leigh Fermor crosses Hungary and Transylvania toward the Danube's Iron Gates. He stays in manor houses and peasant cottages, rides on the Great Plain, and walks through forests and mountain districts, recording language, costume, and the mixed peoples of the Carpathian basin. Conversation, landscape, and scraps of history fill the days. The book is a reconstructed travel narrative written long after the walk, not a political survey of interwar Central Europe.
